New York Botanical GardenNew York Botanical Garden founded in 1891, is one of the world’s greatest collections of plants, a leading educational center for gardening and horticulture, and an international center of plant science. The Botanical Garden features 50 magnificent gardens and collections across 250 beautiful acres in New York City’s Bronx borough.Integral to the work of the Botanical Garden is its LuEsther T. Mertz Library, the most important botanical and horticultural library in the world. Its extraordinary collections comprise more than one million items dating from the 12th century to the present, including books, journals, seed and nursery catalogs, field collectors’ notebooks and correspondence, glasshouse architectural plans, as well as original botanical art and illustration. Highlights of the Library Collections span the globe. They include Basilius Besler’s 17th-century masterpiece showcasing a magnificent private garden in Germany, as well as glorious 18th-century works focusing on the New World. These range from studies of South American insects and plants by intrepid artist Maria Sibylla Merian to renderings of flora and fauna in the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas by British naturalist Mark Catesby. In Europe, there are charming treatises on citrus set in Old World landscapes by Johann Christophe Volkamer and the voluminous illustrated plant collections of apothecary Johann Wilhelm Weinmann. Treasures from the 19th century include exotic plants depicted in brilliant color in Étienne Denisse’s study of Caribbean plants and in thousands of illustrations of orchids from around the world by Walter Hood Fitch. The Far East is represented with spectacular woodcuts of Japanese chrysanthemums from Kikka Meiji-sen by Kanezumi Imai. Artwork
